SOUTH Sydney Rabbitohs Prop David Fifita is excited to lead the Australian Prime Minister’s XIIIs side this weekend.
Named captain ahead of their arrival in Port Moresby today, Fifita said it has been a long while compete to compete in Port Moresby.
“It’s my first time to be here as I’ve heard all the stories, all the boys talk about it but for me to be here, I’m blessed and experiencing it means so much to me.”
“It’s going to be a tough game, obviously PNG side is always physical, and some of them are built just like me and bring depth to this match. We know what to expect from them, it will not be an easy match but we’re looking forward to it.”
Meanwhile Australian PMs XIII Head Coach Ben Te’o said it feels great to return to PNG for another weekend of rugby at the National Football Stadium.
“It’s always great to play a game of footy here, coach Queensland Cup games but it’s exciting to bring a youth group over here, for them to experience it too.”
Te’o who has previously represented in the 2013 edition, has also coached in the Queensland Cup traveling.
His Australian side consist of mostly fresh talents who recently transitioned into top grade playing in the NRL including top guns, Ezra Mam, Jock Madden, Billy Walters, Nick Meany and Josh Curran to name a few.
“It’s a young team, a-lot of these guys have recently broken into the NRL in the last two or three years. A lot of them are up-and-coming rep players, so this is a good taste for them, they’ve come over to compete against a good Papua New Guinean side, “he said.
The Australian side are expected to participate in several rugby clinics tomorrow before a captains run as they prepare to compete against PNG teams.
Their first match will see the Australian School Girls take on the Junior PNG Orchids, followed by the Australian School Boys clash against Junior PNG Kumuls. The main fixtures will be the Women’s and Mens PMs XIIIs clash which is expected to feature NRL and NRLW figures on Saturday.
