PAPUA New Guinea’s biggest off-season basketball event is the National Souths Basketball League (NSBL). Set to return in May, the event promises another exciting showcase of local talent.

The renowned annual tournament will be staged at the Taurama Aquatic Centre in Port Moresby from May 7-10.

The Basketball Federation PNG sanctions the NSBL. It has been running consistently for the past 19 years.

NSBL has cemented its reputation as a key fixture on the country’s basketball calendar. Petroleum Resource Kutubu (PRK) continues its support as the naming rights sponsor.

Tournament President Sailas Nicky and Vice President Jotham Yawari confirmed the dates and venue this week. They did this after a committee meeting with NSBL Patron Johnny Yawari in Port Moresby.

The organizers also announced two extra tournaments to follow the NSBL event. One is Clash of the Champions in Lae. The other is the Southern Highlands Provincial Tournament at Lake Kutubu.

The Clash of the Champions will feature premiership-winning teams from the past 19 years, both male and female, competing in a special 20th anniversary face-off in Lae. Meanwhile, the Southern Highlands Provincial Tournament will bring together teams from all six districts in the province, including the newly created Mendi Central Electorate.

As preparations continue, organisers are calling on teams to register early. Registration fees have been set at K1000 for both male and female divisions.

Yawari and Nicky emphasised that the Southern Highlands Provincial Tournament remains a top priority, highlighting its importance in developing basketball in the province. While NSBL focuses on identifying and exposing raw talent, the provincial tournament aims to strengthen grassroots participation.

Yawari added that hosting tournaments of this scale provides a boost to the local economy, creating opportunities for small vendors and community businesses.

With planning well underway, the NSBL organizing committee is confident of delivering a successful tournament that not only promotes basketball but also empowers young people. The event aims to steer youth away from illicit activities and encourage discipline, personal growth, and pathways into education and sport.
