PAPUA New Guinea’s female elite sprinter Isila Apkup has equaled her national indoor record after running a 7.46 seconds in the 60m dash event.
She competed at the Rocky Mountain Conference Indoor Championships in Gunnison, Colorado and finished second fastest in the preliminaries.
Apkup qualified for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division 2 Indoor National Championships.
The event will be held at the Virginia Beach Sports Centre, Virginia in two weeks’ time.
Meanwhile, a sore hamstring prevented Apkup from competing well in the 60m finals.
She had qualified for the 200m finals, clocking a time of 24.85 secs, but withdrew from the final to focus on recovery and prepare ahead of the next championship.
