THE Morobe Rugby Union will conclude its 2025 season this Saturday when they host the season grand finale at Igam Barracks.
This season marked a history firsts, strong partnerships and significant strides in rugby development within the province as they continue to develop the game.
“This year has been a landmark for MRU as we successfully administered a full women’s XVs team and Under U20s Team.”
“These achievements highlight our unwavering commitment to broadening and creating meaningful pathways within the sport,” MRU stated.
MRU’s establishment of the Women’s 15s team marks a powerful step forward in promoting gender inclusion in what has traditionally been a male-dominated sport.
“It stands as a testament to the growing interest, capability, and enthusiasm of women in rugby. MRU is proud to play an active role in the development of women’s rugby in Morobe and in PNG, despite the current state of our mother body, PNG Rugby Union.”
Meanwhile an equally significance this season was the formation of the U20s, a milestone made possible through a successful bridge project between Scrum PNG and MRU.
“This collaboration has created a clear and structured pathway for young players graduating from SCRUM to transition into higher levels of competitive rugby.”
“This initiative is an essential component of our long-term development vision, ensuring young talent is nurtured, retained, and provided with opportunities to excel. These milestones would not have been possible without the support of our valued sponsors and partners.”
“Total Waste Management Limited (TWML), whose support provided the crucial thrust that enabled us to commence our season on a strong footing, Lae City Authority, our major sponsor, who stepped in at a critical moment to help us successfully complete the season.”
“Scrum PNG and MPAS for providing the venue and logistical support throughout the course of the season and the PNG Defence Force Engineering Battalion, for generously hosting our Grand Final, a fitting venue to conclude a momentous season.”
MRU has also extended its gratitude all who have been part of their 2025 season laying a strong foundation for the continuous growth of rugby in Morobe Province.
“We also appreciate our brothers in Capital Rugby Union (CRU) and thank them for the rivalry and the opportunity to be measured. We thank you for keeping the spirits of rugby alive and we look forward to having your best team here in Morobe for the Challengers Cup later in the year.”
