BASKETBALL Federation Papua New Guinea has successfully concluded its female engagement program by celebrating it during the Mother’s Day in Kaugere, Moresby South.

This initiative has made a meaningful impact by supporting women aged 18 and older, while the Mi Pikinini Meri program focuses on empowering girls aged 7 to 17.

Under the theme “A Mother’s Love,” the Mother’s Day event featured a special opening devotion delivered by guest speaker Judith Tewigau.

Contributions to the event were made by Women’s Leader Maybel Robinson, Basketball For Good Content and Female Engagement Lead DeLisha Koime, and keynote speaker Rose Marai, NCD Health counselor.

The program included a moment of silence to honor mothers who have passed, accompanied by the lighting of a candle as a symbol of appreciation, strength, and resilience.

It challenges traditional gender roles prevalent in many nations across Oceania and aims to empower women and children by providing a safe environment that encourages learning and active participation in society.

In collaboration with professional service providers, BFPNG educates participants on facilitating change within their homes, addressing topics such as Gender Equality, Diversity, Social Inclusion, Leadership, and Safeguarding, alongside promoting healthy living practices.

Participants were actively engaged in fostering respect within their communities.

Expert coaches led game-based drills to enhance skills while also facilitating open discussions on social and cultural norms, including effective menstrual hygiene management, housekeeping, decision-making, and the equitable sharing of roles and responsibilities.

Fundamentals of basketball, including body movement, footwork, ball handling, and passing, were incorporated into the sessions as well.

Through its Basketball For Good program, the Basketball Federation aspires to create a safe space for all participants to engage meaningfully.

“We take great pride in the success of this program, funded through Team Up in the Pacific in collaboration with FIBA Oceania and the Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea.”

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Army wives of Murray Barracks, The PNG Defense Force, NCD Health Authority, Kaugere Rabia Gini Camp, The Foursquare Living Light Ministry, and the Organizing Committee led by Hebo Pirika, Anna Mope, and Samuel Mope.”

“People ask me what I do in the winter when there’s no baseball. I’ll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.”
