DIGICEL-Exxon Mobil Cup 2024 grand finalists Kroton Hela Wigmen are keen to start the 2025 season following their jersey presentation on Wednesday.
Franchise manager Patrick Wundai said they are expected to face challenges in their competition however are prepared to take on them each week.
In addition to naming their 36-man squad, the new jersey portrays for the 2025 season is special for their franchise incorporating Hela’s traditional colors and symbols representing the province’s pride and team ambition for the season ahead.
Wundai said the club’s renewed focus on mixed talents with the 2025 season emphasizing on Hela based players.
“This year is also special, for the first time we have included a New Guinea Islands based player to the mix, now making us a multicultural team as we celebrate the country’s 50th anniversary.”
He said this initiative is also in line with the development of their new home ground in Tari, strengthening the club’s connection to their home province.
Meanwhile head coach Ian Yaro was given the honors to name his 36-man squad which includes their six players currently contracted to the SP PNG Hunters, as Queensland Rugby League ‘Hostplus’ Cup approaches round 6 this weekend.
The Hunters players includeMurray Connors, Jacob Lot, Trevor Solu, Solo Wane, Bruce Bawa and Valentine Culligan.
This year’s squad will be led by captain Solomon Pokare and vice-captain Kopu Piju
Meanwhile the DEM Cup kicks off with excited this Sunday as the Hela Wigmen side are expecting a tough Grandfinal rematch against current champions Wamp Nga Mt. Hagen Eagles at the Santos National Football Stadium kicking off at 3pm local time.
