PAPUA New Guinea’s Javelin national record holder Lakona Gerega is expected to compete in the 2025 Brisbane Throws Classic- World Athletics Continental Tour Challenger in Australia.
Gerega set the country’s national record to 66.73m after competing in the Oceania Athletics Championships in Suva Fiji, last June.
This record was an improvement by 34cm after he set the previous record at the 2022 Pacific Mini Games in Northern Marianna’s claiming a silver medal.
The 28-year-old is expected to make an appearance among some of the world’s best throwers either in javelin, discus or shotput.
Meanwhile the Brisbane Throws Classic commenced yesterday and is expected to continue today.
“The first Challenger meet of the Global World Athletics Continental Tour, Throwers from across Oceania and abroad have been gathering at the Australian National Throws Centre in Brisbane preparing for the weekend’s competition,” Oceania Athletics stated.
Gerega is among Australian elites Taryn Gollshewsky, Xylavene Beale, Aiden Harvey, Dayne Crees, Michael Burian and Cameron Newton-Smith.
They are expected to compete among other international elites including Lawrence Okoye (Great Britain), Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage (Sri Lanka), Scott Lincoln (Great Britain) and Sae Takemoto (Japan).
