A group of martial artists are determined to support each other’s work to promote human growth and development.
Newly appointed World Taekwondo Organization (WTO) PNG president Byron Chan said this movement will help them. They aim to promote positive principles and values. These principles and values are taught and encouraged in their fraternity.
This was addressed during the martial artists first officially meeting to open the year.
The Chief Instructor of Dragon Karanas Mixed Martial Arts Club also encouraged young people to take up martial arts training. This helps build their discipline and character. It also allows them to make use of their free time.
He also encouraged martial artists and heads of styles to work together. He urged them to continue training. This would help them grow in their understanding of these arts.
Meanwhile Sensei Byron is also President of Japan Shotokan Karate-Do International in PNG. His club are affiliated to several other international organizations for martial arts styles, self-defense and combat sports.
“The aim of these associations is to create pathways and opportunities for his students and members.”
Sensei Byron was joined by East Gate Karate Academy Chief Instructor Julius Piku. Joining as well was Kung Fu-Wushu Instructor Andrew Molen. Dragon Karanas MMA Senior Instructor Steven Tommy also joined. He’s also WTO-PNG vice president.
Tommy was awarded a Third Dan for the club during the occasion. Other students were also given new ranks after a recent grading in 2024.
The meeting aimed to recognize each other’s achievements in the martial arts and combat sport arena. It also sought to promote its growth in the country for the next generation.
Sensei Julius said martial arts plays an important role in shaping individual character. It helps individuals as they take on different challenges in life.
“But martial artists struggle to do their work. They lack resources, support, and most importantly, affordable space to run their program. “We also produce athletes for sports,” he added. “Without good venues, we can’t contribute fully in that way.”
The meeting also signified the opening of classes for the East Gate Karate Academy and Dragon Karanas MMA for 2025.
All new and current students are encouraged to attend training with their respective instructors. Sifu Molen will also be opening his club soon.
