BASKETBALL Federation of Papua New Guinea has announced its 3×3 and 5×5 extended squad. It prepares to send national teams to several events this year.
President David Peter said they had a skeleton staff. Despite this, the trials last year helped them. They name an extended squad for this season.
“We have a small staff. Coach Nick (Daroa) has helped us compile the list with that capacity. This is especially for our 3×3 and 5×5 extended squad after the trials in December.”
“It’s still a long list. We are in the process of trimming the squad down. We want what’s best for the country. We want the best team that will go out there, represent and play for our country,” he said.
Peter said the list was compiled for their first phase after thoroughly screening athletes. The screening was done across different parts of the country. Their inclusions in last year’s tournaments were considered.
“The list we have is coming from different regions of the country. We’re pleased that the process has been rigorous. We have tried to follow the choice criteria and the process rigorously.”
“There’s still a lot of work that needs to be done. We are giving our best to guarantee the choice is fair. It is also transparent and fair,” he added.
The final teams are expected to compete in the upcoming 3×3 FIBA Asia Cup in Singapore in March. They will join in the Pacific Mini Games in Palau in June. They are also set to compete in the 5×5 FIBA Melanesian Cup in October.
